Pelvis & the Nervous System
A somatic approach to resolving pelvic symptoms and awakening connection.
Golden nerves within the pelvis.
Before I get technical, I invite you to imagine the nervous system like the roots of a tree. Nerves, like roots form networks throughout the body, branching out head to toe. Let your awareness float down your body sensing the nervous system everywhere, sending signals, responsible for your sensation, movement, bodily functions and responding to everything. The vagus nerve, which is the largest and longest nerve, moves down the center of your body from the brain to the belly.
Did you just inhale? Can you follow it with your attention attuned to the sensations of your breath expansion and then softening exhale? What do you notice as you sense this vital nerve network?
Where is there flow, ease and where is there a sense of tightness or stagnation? We are like rivers, designed to flow, with rocks that can change our course or make it harder for the body to maintain its fluid rhythm.
When we access the nervous system through body awareness and our felt sense, we create the possibility to transform what we’ve been holding in our pelvis, in our womb/wombspace and layers of tissue and energy there.
The pelvis houses a dense network of nerves and is closely linked to the autonomic nervous system, the pathways that regulate safety, stress, rest, arousal, and connection. Because of this dynamic relationship, both the pelvis and the nervous system are responsive to life experiences, chronic stress, emotional armoring, injury, trauma and hormonal fluctuations. There are also connections through the central nervous system, brain through the spine, and motor/sensory/mechanical pathways as well.
The pelvic floor, sacrum, organs and tissue layers are especially sensitive and tend to hold unresolved experiences. When a person feels supported and safe, the pelvis and the nervous system receives signals of safety, tension softens and the whole body settles. When the nervous system perceives threat, the pelvis may brace, guard, or disconnect as a way to protect.
The body innately responds in order to protect and also to repair and restore harmony. The body is designed to exist in rhythmic fluctuations and is always headed for homeostasis (optimal function and a sense of balance). The nervous system is the command center of our body, regulating all other systems. So we can say, that working with the relationship of the nervous system to other body parts, such as the pelvis, can keep our river flowing, dissolving the rocks in the way of truly experiencing the aliveness, pleasure and intimacy of any moment (and resolve ailing symptoms).
With the pillars and teachings of Pelvic Harmony, we cultivate awareness and practical, embodied tools to tend to this dynamic relationship and life’s ebbs and flows. We learn to sense the body’s signals as information and tend to ourselves in ways that support healing resolution, reclamation and a peaceful center. With this awakens our vitality and pleasure.
We human beings are made to experience the full spectrum of emotion and life’s possibilities. Conscious awareness and embodied connection awaken us into this moment, reconnecting us with what is alive for us now. When we are supported and implement a somatic approach, we become free from the weight of the past, ignited by our inner flame, and grounded in our innate nature.
The body heals through our relationship with it. When we approach pelvic health somatically, listening to sensation, honoring the nervous system’s pace, and allowing the body to guide, we create the conditions for lasting change. This work restores trust, safety, and communication within the body, supporting a living healing journey of remembering, discovering, and unlocking our inherent greatness. I am here with and for you.
